PRAIA DA LUZ & ALGARVE EVENTS APRIL 2019
Our April Algarve Events calendar is packed with traditional Easter events, including the famous Easter Sunday Flower Torches Festival in São Brás de Alportel and “Mãe Soberana” Festivities in Loulé, plus lots of Easter “Folar” cake fairs - Portuguese sweet bread, often with baked with a whole egg (including shell) inside! We’ve also got Spring Fairs and village markets to enjoy and the “Rota do Petisco” is back again for 4 weeks from 24th April; a great chance to experience a variety of little Portuguese savoury dishes (and entertainment!) at participating restaurants across the Algarve!
- Flower Torches Festival, São Brás de Alportel - 21st April – a beautiful Easter Sunday tradition where the streets are lined with red carpets and flowers, the parade starts from the church and people carry stunning handmade flower “torches”. The streets open from 9.30am and the procession starts at 11am.
- Mãe Soberana Festivities, Loulé - 21st April (Festa Pequena) and 5th May (Festa Grande) – the biggest religious festivity in Portugal where thousands of people join in the Easter Sunday parade to carry “Mãe Soberana” (the Sovereign Mother and patroness of Loulé) through the streets from the Nossa Senhora da Piedade chapel to the church of São Francisco and then 15 days later the statue is carried in another huge procession to the sanctuary on top of the small hill west of Loulé.
